I went to see Prometheus on friday as it opened here. Pretty much the only part that impressed me about the it was the android, David. And let's face it even his part was pretty bad. Being a huge fan of the Alien frachise otherwise this just made me want to crawl under my seat and rock myself gently while humming something soothing.
Never the less it lead to a bit of late night sketching and turned into a portrait of the said android, David. At first there was only David in the pic but then he felt so lonely that I gave him a Xenomorph buddy to play with.
**EDIT** OK, I think it's best I add this here. I know I opened the conversation by commenting on Prometheus myself. And it has budded some interesting discussions about the movie itself and the Alien franchise. But I am getting slightly tired of all the people telling me how I just expected it to be in canon and hence didn't like it. No, I did not expect that. Being a 30 something movie buff and having followed this particular franchise most of my life, I had actually checked my facts before going in. I am also glad many of you guys liked it. Good on you. I'm sure if we now started really talking about movies overall we'd figure out many of you love other movies too that I think are utterly rubbish and the same goes the other way around. I'm sure plenty of you would sneer at me saying I love the speech of President Bartlett in ID4. And be right to do so. But as this is an art forum, not a movie one, I really hoped for more critique on the artwork and less on my movie taste when pressing the "critiques requested" button.
I can honestly say that this is an AWESOME piece. The second movie I saw this summer was Prometheus, and frankly, it scared the crap out of me. David is almost the true embodiment of Weyland Industries [soon to be Weyland-Yutani], with that cold, dispassionate look of a scientist with an experiment. And it is essentially a well-known fact since Aliens that the Xenos HATE synthetics. With these two, it seems as though the two are sizing each other up. One, to evaluate how an experiment would go, the other, to see how best to kill the abomination in front of it. Overall, the only bad thing I have to say is that there was a minor mistake in the Xeno's jaw, but other than that, this is an unbelieveable piece of work.
I think you captured Michael Fassbender's almost childlike innocence yet ruefully indifferent look quite well. I think the fact you added the xenomorph in also gives the piece a good dynamic. It successfully looks as though David is surprised and fascinated, but not at all scared of the beast that could easily punch a huge whole through his skull at any moment. I feel as if we could see this picture play out in real time, the next thing David would do would be to pet the alien. He seemed to have an affinity for touching things he probably shouldn't...
Ohhh I love it. Amazing job and details!! You got Fassbender's look down perfectly! I'm a huge Xenomorph fan as well, especially of the queen. I think it would have been interesting if they showed a bit more of their evolution, and how the queen came into play.
This is beautiful work, I must say. the detail on both of them is GORGEOUS, and the look of wonder in David's eyes are astounding. He looks very much like a curious child staring up in wonder at the creature he was trying to see. I think it would have been far more interesting to explore his character. I have to admit that side of him did intrigue me in the movie, but, well it was the only thing about him that intrigued me really. :/
I know you're tired of hearing opinions on the movie, but I just want you to know you're not alone. I'm sorry you're being given a hard time with not being crazy about Prometheus. I personally HATED the movie. It was almost like it WASN'T a part of the Alien franchise and a really poor attempt at that, and I really love the Aliens. I even was one for Halloween at one point. Even as a stand alone movie it would have still been crap. I think I could have written a better fan-fiction. It's one thing to have new ideas, but to blow the original ones out of proportion was really insulting to the material. I'm glad I've met someone else here that apparently thinks the same way I do. Great art still.
Okay, wait let me correct myself before someone else does, alright sure maybe it technically wasn't supposed to be part of the Alien franchise, it still makes no sense. It barely explained anything, and the ending was a half-@ssed attempt at sequel bait....again...
Sorry, my stupid little rant it over. You don't have to respond, but I just wanted to let you know your art is beautiful and I'm sorry people are giving you a hard time.
